Strong turnout for Ride in the Rocks

LUCERNE VALLEY — The Ride in the Rocks fundraiser Saturday raised more than $12,000 for local students, organizers said.

This was the fourth running of the event, which features a grueling 22-mile mountain bike ride, a tame 10-mile ride and a family 5-mile ride/run/walk.

A large portion of the money will go toward the annual science camp trip for local fifth-graders, according to Millie Rader of the Mitsubishi Cement Corporation Educational ?Foundation, which puts on the event.

The 167 participants topped last year’s number by 10, making it the largest turnout in the history of the event, Rader said.

Two pro riders from Big Bear competed, with Romolo Forcino of Chains Required taking first place in the 22-mile with a time of 1 hour, 33 minutes.

Derek Herman from Bear Valley Bikes took third with a time of 1:37.

Between them was a non-pro — Omya California Plant Manager Peter Sutherland, who finished second in 1:35.

Peter is a desk jockey, Rader wrote in an email. He works 40-plus hours a week running a limestone plant, but he also frequently rides his bike to work at the top of Crystal Creek Road in Lucerne Valley, from his home in Big Bear, and back again.

Sutherland was part of a 10-rider Omya team.

San Bernardino County Supervisor Neil Derry’s field representative Alan Rasmussen and Lucerne Valley Unified School District Board of Trustees member Jim Harvey both rode the 10-mile course, finishing in 1:18 and 1:19 respectively.

A small army of volunteers and sponsors made the event possible. Lucerne Valley Community Church provided 22 of the 36 volunteers and also had 12 riders.

Sponsors included: Mitsubishi Cement Corporation Educational Foundation, the Daily Press, The Leader, Mitsubishi Cement Corporation, ICR Staffing Services, Gresham Savage, Out of this World BBQ, High Desert Party Rentals, Team Big Bear, Lucerne Valley Self Storage, Chains Required, Safety Employees Benefit Association (SEBA), Victorville Motors, Lucerne Valley Market and Hardware, Hi-Grade Materials, Kangan Water, Lucerne Valley Lions Club, Janette and Jason Graham, L.V.
