Petition the AAA
The American Automobile Association (AAA) wants Congress to cut funds that support trail, biking and walking programs in order to funnel that money to the highway system. AAA has forgotten that bicyclists and pedestrians drive, support AAA, pay gas taxes and want balanced transportation systems that provide the choice to get around in a variety of ways.

Dale Evans Parkway update, September 23rd
Work has definitely started. The old roadway seems to be gone completely.

Dale Evans Parkway update, September 22nd
There are now “Detour” signs up at various locations surrounding and adjacent to this section of road, and there is a sign notifying drivers that work is to run from September 20th through November 17th. Other than the signs, though, there seems not to be any actual road work started.

Dale Evans Parkway update, September 17th
According to the Town’s website, this work was supposed to begin on September 2nd, and be completed by November 17th. According to one of the Town’s engineers, the work was supposed to begin around September 8th and be done by the first week in October.

Charity ride for breast cancer awareness
Trek Women is holding a Breast Cancer Awareness Ride on Saturday, October 9, at 10:00 a.m. There are going to be 10-mile and 25-mile casual rides, jumping off from Victorville Cycles at 12408 Hesperia Road in Victorville. The $25 entry fee all goes to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, and each participant will receive a free gift. The first 100 to sign up even get a free lunch. Registration is on-line here.

If you have some time and want to see (or ride in) an extreme road race, check out the Son of Death Ride today. I’ll be manning SAG 2, which is just before the ranger station and the turn onto Sherman Pass Road.

Apple Valley to extend bike lanes on Dale Evans Parkway
We just heard about this, so details are a bit sketchy, but word is that the Town of Apple Valley is getting ready to repave Dale Evans Parkway between Waalew at the north and Otoe at the south, adding bike lanes at the same time. This long-needed improvement of “slaughter alley” will connect the existing bike paths on Waalew and Dale Evans south of Otoe. Furthermore, we hear that this will be completed Fall 2010.

2010 Tour de Apple Valley registration now open
On-line registration is now open for the 3th Annual Tour de Apple Valley, via PayPal. Maps and elevation charts are available on-line as well for the Metric Half Century and Metric Century routes, as well as downloadable route files for those with Garmins.
