Route 66 road work
Route 66 (AKA National Trails Highway) has been repaved and/or slurry sealed between North Bryman Road in Oro Grande and Vista Road in Helendale. They haven’t gotten around to painting the lines, yet, but this 4.5 miles of the roadway is much nicer now.

The biggest bicycle race in the United States has a stage in our backyard this Saturday, May 21st. And it’s not just any stage: Stage 7 of the 2011 Amgen Tour of California will be the ultimate test of the riders’ resolve to capture the yellow jersey.

Apple Valley road work
The Town of Apple Valley has been doing a lot of slurry seal work. Bear Valley Road, Outer Highway 18, Thunderbird, and a bunch of smaller streets are getting the treatment.

New start times for the A and B rides
The Victor Valley Bicycle Club is changing the start times of its A and B rides, thanks to the longer days and warming mornings. As of May 14, both the Saturday and Sunday rides will start at 7:00 AM instead of 8:00 AM.

There will be another criterium practice on Wednesday, May 11th, at 6:00 pm.

Ride for bike lanes wrap-up
The 2011 Bike Ride for Bike Lanes along Bear Valley Road from Victorville to Apple Valley went smoothly this afternoon, thanks to organizers Pat and Chuck Hanson, with the able assistance of Apple Valley town councilmember Barb Stanton.

Apple Valley BMX Skate Park grand opening Saturday
The Apple Valley BMX Skate Park at James A. Woody Park will celebrate its reopening Saturday with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 10:30 a.m. and a pro demonstration at 11 a.m.

HDC bike lane?
The powers-that-be behind the proposed High Desert Corridor (HDC) held another community-outreach meeting last night at the Apple Valley town hall to report on the progress being made in this, the environmental impact, portion of the project.

Wrightwood to Newcomb Ranch ride
Aaron Christoffersen and the Victor Valley Bicycle Club are putting together a ride from Wrightwood to Newcomb Ranch for Saturday, April 23rd. It should run from 7:30 AM to 10:30 AM.

BMX allowed at James A. Woody Park
The Victorville Daily Press (Sunday, April 30th) reports that James A. Woody park re-opened Saturday after remodeling the facilities there to allow BMX bike riding. Congratulations to the local cyclists that kept after the Town Council until this got done, and thanks to the Town of Apple Valley for making this a reality.

High Desert Corridor community meeting
The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) and CalTrans will be holding a meeting April 13 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Council Chambers of the Town of Apple Valley to update everyone on the High Desert Corridor (HDC).

Bike lane inauguration
About a dozen brave folks gathered tonight’s bike ride to inaugurate the bike lane on Dale Evans Parkway. We had a great time despite the late hour, chilly weather, and the even chillier wind. Thank you to everyone who came out and supported Healthy Apple Valley, and cycling in the high desert.

CalTrans clean-up on Hwy 18
CalTrans has a crew out power-sweeping the “bike lane” on the south side of Hwy 18 through Apple Valley — finally. With any luck, they’ll do the whole thing, both sides, through Apple Valley, so those of us with skinny tires don’t have to venture into the traffic lanes to avoid all the debris in the emergency/bike lane that’s been there since the last resurfacing.
