• Sideswipes pickup truck on Main Street in Hesperia

A 67-year-old bicyclist suffered major injuries after colliding with a pickup truck driven by an 84-year-old Apple Valley man Tuesday morning in Hesperia.

The collision occurred at about 9:36 a.m. near the intersection of C Avenue and Main Street.

When deputies from the Hesperia Sheriff’s Station and personnel from the San Bernardino County Fire Department arrived, they found David Ueland lying in the eastbound lanes of Main Street with a large laceration to his head.

He was transported to Hesperia Airport, where Mercy Air flew him to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center for further treatment.

According to the preliminary investigation, Ueland was riding a black and blue bicycle eastbound in the No. 2 lane of Main Street while Michael Walker of Apple Valley was driving a black Dodge Ram 3500 in the adjacent No. 1 lane.

Investigators said Ueland attempted to merge into the occupied lane and sideswiped the truck’s rear passenger-side quarter panel.

Deputies said drugs and alcohol are not suspected to have been factors in the collision.
