Given how few good jumping-off points there are for rides in the area, it seems appropriate to mention that a new Starbucks has opened in Apple Valley, at the corner of Highway 18 and Dale Evans Parkway.

Thanks, animal control!
From what I can tell, there some local rider who deserves our thanks, for it seems that someone pepper-sprayed one or more of those loose dogs on Johnson Road, getting them to rethink the wisdom of chasing cyclists. The last three times I’ve been by, they didn’t so much as bark.
Navajo Road update
Navajo Road is no longer dirt and gravel in the construction section south of Johnson Road, but the asphalt is neither smooth nor free of sand. It’s not particularly dangerous or different to ride, but let’s hope that they make it better by the completion of construction.
