The ride is so-named because people actually used to do it at night, although depending on the time of year you ride it, night may not be such a bad idea, given the temperatures during the day.
Road conditions
National Trails Highway (the old Route 66) doesn't look too bike friendly, so it may be best to do this with at least one other person.

Variations
You don't have to start and end at the Subway, but it seems more convenient than starting and ending at the Valero. If you like Starbucks, you could even start and end there, but getting to and from Highway 18 East from the Starbucks is currently a hassle (this will improve after they finish the new Starbucks at Highway 18 East and Dale Evans Parkway).
