Apple Valley south loop: 30 miles

This ride circumnavigates much of Apple Valley south of Highway 18 East. It's great for a group ride, although there are a couple of gotchas.

First, The climb up Central Road can be a killer. More than one biker has had to walk his bike up to Roundup Way (see Variations below).

Second, watch yourself on the descent from Central on Roundup. You can really fly down this grade.

Third, Deep Creek Road isn't terribly bike friendly, so stay to the right and keep an eye peeled for big, bored, territorial dogs.

Road conditions

The east end of Apple Valley Road, Central Road south of Bear Valley Road, and Deep Creek Road have virtually no shoulder, which doesn't slow down vehicular traffic in the least.

Variations

There are numerous opportunities to shorten this ride by cutting across "corners", and you can always omit the excursion south along Central Road.

Also as noted above, if you don't think you want to try the climb(s) on the south end of Central Road, cut over to Kiowa Road on Tussing Ranch Road, and then go up to Roundup Way.

Between Highway 18 East and Deep Creek Road, the roads are either ample or feature a bike lane. However, this still leaves the intersection of Apple Valley Road and Bear Valley Road. If you'd rather avoid this, check out the bypass.
