The tires sloshed through the wet sandy soil as a series of lycra-clad teens climbed their way up a steep trail between the Joshua trees and juniper bushes. At the top they were greeted with a view spanning the entire Summit Valley and San Bernardino National Forest. The way down was faster with a couple yells of joy. This ride, south of Hesperia, is a typical practice for the Victor Valley composite mountain biking team.

January 10th, 2014, will see the start of the much-anticipated Yucca Loma Bridge, a project more than 40 years in the making. In December, the Town Council awarded a $37.3 million contract to Security Paving, Inc. for the construction of the Yucca Loma Bridge over the Mojave River and Yates Road improvements project. A ground-breaking ceremony is scheduled for Friday, January 10.

As the new year approaches, several new traffic safety laws — including two aimed at bicyclists and teenage drivers — could help make High Desert roadways safer for residents as they take effect in 2014, California Highway Patrol spokesman Matt Hunt said.
